This letter is in response to the column by Tom Convery (Dec. 16) and the accompanying editorial (Dec. 16) regarding former Medford firefighter Joseph MacDonald.
The members of Medford Firefighters Local 1032 are displeased by the way we were portrayed in these two opinion pieces. The column and editorial give the impression that the members of our union are resisting an effort to place Mr. MacDonald’s name on our Fallen Firefighter Memorial at Oak Grove Cemetery. In fact, no one has ever come forward to any member of the union to formally inquire about putting this man’s name on the memorial.
I have asked members of the firefighters union, both past and present, of any knowledge of Mr. MacDonald. No one I have spoken with, including Joe Catalupa, who was president of Local 1032 from 1978 to 1999, had any recollection of Mr. MacDonald. When I spoke with Tom Convey and asked why he had not requested any input from the union prior to writing his column, he told me that retired firefighter John Morgan informed him that he had gone to the union to make the request regarding Mr. MacDonald. After speaking with Mr. Morgan, he stated to me that he never made a formal request of the union. Only in passing had he spoken with a couple of retired firefighters and had mentioned it to them.
Allow me to say a few words about the firefighter memorial, which is owned by the members of Local 1032, not the city of Medford or the Medford Fire Department. In June 1997, the Medford firefighters dedicated our Fallen Firefighter Memorial through the hard work of some of our members. Retired Lt. Paul Glen Cross, the historian of the union, retired Lt. Gerry DiCristifaro and a few other people, including retired Lt. Bill Coakley, were charged with the design, erection, and placement of the memorial. They were also requested to investigate all line-of-duty deaths and determine what names should be placed on the monument. To my knowledge, this is exactly what was done.
If the Medford Firefighters were approached with this story, we would give our utmost attention to resolving this matter, whatever the outcome. In closing, I’d like to state that in my estimation it was unfair that the firefighters of Local 1032 were not notified or informed of this story prior to its publication.
